CrossFit Nutrition & Dietary Guidelines

The Paleo diet consists of eating foods found in the Paleolithic period of history, such as meat, fish, seeds and nuts. In the Paleo diet, processed foods, refined carbohydrates, legumes and dairy are not allowed. CrossFit is a complete fitness program that consists of explosive athletic movements and intense cardiovascular exercises. A Paleo diet is perfect for anyone doing CrossFit. CrossFit Dietary Guidelines

In addition to being an exercise program, CrossFit has its own nutritional guidelines for athletes involved in this exercise program. CrossFit recommends a reduced calorie diet rich in lean meats, vegetables, seeds and nuts. CrossFit does not recommend a diet high in carbohydrates because these types of diets raise insulin levels. Increased insulin levels are related to chronic disease and obesity. CrossFit recommends that calories consist of the following macronutrients: 30 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrates and 40 percent fat. CrossFit insists that a diet that a diet high in vegetables, lean meats, fruits, nuts and seeds decreases the risks for cancer and heart disease and promotes longevity.

Paleo Nutrition

The Paleo diet consists of meats, vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. This diet, high in fiber and other essential vitamins and minerals, was what our ancestors ate, before the advent of modern agriculture. Our bodies have not adapted to eating processed foods. A diet high in processed foods, carbohydrates and wheat can cause all sorts of problems, including gastrointestinal issues, fatigue and blood glucose impairments. A Paleo diet, on the other hand, can promote weight loss, optimize health and lower your risk for certain diseases.

The Paleo Diet and Crossfit

The guidelines and principles for both Crossfit nutrition and the Paleo diet are much the same. The CrossFit website even says that a Paleolithic diet is consistent with CrossFit nutrition recommendations with a few modifications. It is recommended that moderate glycemic index carbohydrates be consumed before CrossFit exercise to help fuel your workout. Sports drinks are recommended during workouts that are more than one hour in duration.
